![]() Robert finally strikes a deal with Eduardo. However, he can't say anything or Maria will know that her father has gotten her all worked up over nothing. Eduardo does not like the pushy New York dancer and objects. Robert, still attempting to get a job accidentally delivers an orchid. His plan is to stir her romantically then set her up with a suitor of his choice. Eduardo starts sending Maria orchids and love letters signing them from a secret admirer. Maria is next but she is not interested in any of the men she knows. The tradition of the family is that each girl must get married in order of birth. Robert tells Eduardo, whom he doesn't realize is Maria's father, "Her personality is like the inside of a refrigerator." However, Robert meets the beautiful Maria (Rita Hayworth) who gives him the cold shoulder. Robert sings "Dearly Beloved," but the plan does not work. ![]() The plan being that Eduardo will hear Robert sing and then offer him a job. Lucky for Robert, his old friend Xavier Cugat is the orchestra leader at the hotel and arranges for Robert to sing as his orchestra plays at Acuña's oldest daughter's wedding. Eduardo is too busy trying to marry off his daughters to even give Robert an audition. Robert tries to get a job dancing at a hotel owned by Eduardo Acuña (Adolphe Menjou). He finds himself penniless in Argentina after losing at the track. Yet, even in black and white these two luminous stars make for a bright piece of celluloid entertainment.įred Astaire plays famous Broadway dancer Robert Davis. Unfortunately they would never make a color film together. You Were Never Lovelier is the second and final teaming of Fred Astaire and Rita Hayworth. I also really like the cheery number "Make Way for Tomorrow." Rita costars with Gene Kelly, who has some wonderful dances - including his famous "Alter Ego" number dancing with a reflection of himself - but in the end it's Rita who truly makes the movie for me.Rita Hayworth and Fred Astaire in You Were Never Lovelier. October 9th also features THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI (1948), costarring and directed by her then-husband, Orson Welles.ĬOVER GIRL (1944) is a bit long but very colorful and tuneful, featuring the Oscar-nominated "Long Ago and Far Away," written by Jerome Kern and Ira Gershwin. She sings "Put the Blame on Mame" and has a steamy love-hate relationship with Glenn Ford. October 9th kicks off with what might be Rita's most famous film appearance, the title role in GILDA (1946). It's true "silver screen magic"!Īlso showing on the 2nd: MY GAL SAL (1942) with Victor Mature an effective early role in Howard Hawks' classic ONLY ANGELS HAVE WINGS (1939) BLOOD AND SAND (1941) with Tyrone Power and Linda Darnell (this film repeats on October 8th) and THE STRAWBERRY BLONDE (1941) with James Cagney, Olivia de Havilland, and Jack Carson. YOU WERE NEVER LOVELIER is particularly special to me, with its lilting Jerome Kern melodies and fantastic dances. Astaire had known Rita since she was a young girl whose family appeared in vaudeville as The Dancing Cansinos, and it's sometimes said she was his favorite partner. The tribute starts in fine style on October 2nd with the two films she made with Fred Astaire, YOU'LL NEVER GET RICH (1941) and YOU WERE NEVER LOVELIER (1942).
